Using a single piece of sheet material measuring 1 x 2 metres, the brief asked us to design something that can be cut and constructed from that material. Basically a flat-pack kit that could be bought or ordered by anyone and be simple for them to put together and use.
I immediately began thinking about what people know and associated with flat-pack....and the answer is simply boxes and slots! The drone of Ikea like step-by-step alphanumeric assembly was itching in the back of my mind so a simplistic but imaginative approach was what I ran with.
My solution as then as far from box-like as possible....spherical! Most examples of circular flat packs involved slotted sections rather than rolled or folded parts...so I fancied the challenge! The 'ball' is a two-piece flat pack that is very simple to assemble and surprising strong in its construction when assembled.
It is intended for use in less formal office environments and studios as a pigeon hole/desk tidy. Each one can be personalised or decorated before and after assembly and simply hooked on the wall to be used as a pigeon hole OR sit balanced on a desk as an interesting and engaging desk tidy. The strength of its structure allows for game-like engagement; notes, letters and toys can be placed in it and thrown to other people in the class/studio/office but can also be rolled around on the desk without things falling out!
